・リードートルコ南部のシリア国境近くで起きた大地震では、トルコとシリアの両国でこれまでに合わせて２万３０００人以上が死亡しました。現地では懸命の救助活動が続いていて、トルコ南部では地震から１００時間以上が経過した１０日、がれきの下に取り残された夫婦が助け出されました。
トルコ南部で６日に発生したマグネチュード７．８の地震やその後も続く大きな揺れにより、トルコとシリアではこれまでに、トルコ国内で２万２１３人、シリア側では少なくとも３３８４人が死亡していて、亡くなった人の数は両国合わせて２万３０００人を超えています。
２０１１年に起きた東日本大震災による死者と行方不明者は、「震災関連死」を含めて１０日までに合わせて２万２２１２人にのぼっていますが、今回の大地震の犠牲者は、これを上回る規模となっています。

One survivor in the Turkish province of Hatay said, "God forbid anyone goes through this sorrow, this pain. We have thousands, tens of thousands, dead"
